Data abstracted from Sacramento County Coroner’s reports reveals that between 1950 -1979 the suicide rate for 15 to 19 year olds increased steadily. The 20 to 24 year olds had the highest suicide rates. A high percentage of suicides showed prior maladaptive behavior and deep seated psychological problems. To the extent that public servants and family are trained to recognize symptoms and precipitators of depression, the greater the chance that these suicides will be prevented.
