Bressler examines several variables related to the high incidence of suicides and alcohol/drug abuse among physicians. Factors including role strain, dependency problems, magical thinking, and identity problems are considered. These are related to the findings that the highest incidence of suicide occur in the decade following medical training and that 20-30% of suicides are associated with drug abuse and 40% with alcoholism.
