Study of 36 mothers who had lost a baby with sudden infant death syndrome showed that these mothers have strong feelings of guilt and anxiety and a decline in self-confidence. There was a tendency to overprotect a subsequent baby and most mothers admitted to “cot watching”. Anxiety felt by bereaved mothers appears to be more than a transitory phenomenon and it is suggested that health visitor’s continuing support is of considerable help.
