Of 151 attempted suicides, 56% occured while under limited stress, 9% were going through a serious life crisis & 35% had pre-existing psychiatric disorders. After initial contact in the hospital emergency room 69% were sent home, 18% were admitted for medical care & 13% were transferred to psychiatric care. Findings of a follow-up suggest that brief hospitalization may be used as a bridgehead for further ambulatory care. A two year follow-up is discussed.
