US suicides in 1956 totalled 20000. A study of 32 Veteran suicides compared case histories, psychological tests and suicides notes with equal-sized groups which: a) attempted b) threatened c) were non-suicidal. Some conclusions are: 1) 3/4 suicides signal their intentions 2) 1/2 died within 90 days of discharge 3) those who threaten more may be more greatly disturbed mentally than the actual suicides. Special care is indicated for those who threaten suicide as well as recently-released patients.
