Children who had attempted suicide prior to admission to a state hospital were identified from clinical files. The majority were in the 13 to 18 year old range, lagging behind in school achievement, and usually from unstable homes. Diagnostic data, method of attempted suicide and summaries of historical descriptions are presented. Recommendations include involving parents, schools, and religion, and providing improved community-based services.
