Of all the medications used today for psychiatric patients, lithium carbonate comes closest to offering a pharmalogical cure in the treatment of manic depressive illness. Providing the medication is taken as prescribed, mood swings are eradicated or greatly reduced in frequency and hospital admissions curtailed, allowing clients to remain in their communities and lead fairly normal lives.
