A literature review to clarify the relationship between attempted and committed suicide. 15 follow-up studies of attempted suicide reveal that the suicide rate is highest in 1st 2 years but continues to be greater than expected. Incidence of suicide estimated at 10-20%. 9 studies of completed suicides show 20-65% have made prior attempts. Supports concept that attempted suicide and completed suicide involve 2 different, though overlapping populations. (JE)
