In reviewing 100 suicidal emergencies that had been appraised initially in telephone contact, the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Centre has developed and tested working strategies. The first strategy is to develop a dependent relationship, and use it in promoting an interest in living. The second strategy is to consciously work with the caller on the basis of an assessment schedule. The Case History and Evaluation check lists can help determine appropriate action to take with the Caller.
