Highlights • Evolutionary processes have recently been implicated in suicidal behavior. Suicidal human behaviors parallel eusocial behavior. Hyperarousal-shutdown behaviors in suicidal humans parallel antipredator responses. Neuroscience and psychology support the involvement of these processes in suicide. These processes are not exclusive and represent new directions for suicide research.
