The Centre for Suicide Prevention would like to commend David Gray and the CBC for their willingness to directly but sensitively address the issue of suicide in their interviews.

This past Friday, May 31, David Gray interviewed Ex-NHL goalie Clint Malarchuk on the Calgary Eyeopener. He asked Malarchuk about his suicide attempt and ideation, having previously mentioned and inquired about his risk factors such as trauma, OCD, and depression.

This thoughtful handling of the interview with Malarchuk is very much the way we at CSP believe discussion of suicide should be handled in the media. The sensationalism of suicide happens far too frequently, but the framing of the topic within the context of mental health and life factors effectively sheds light on the subject of suicide.

Thank you for your interview and for not being afraid to talk about suicide directly and openly in a public forum.
