World Suicide Prevention Day is Sept. 10, 2011

The Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP) would like to bring to your attention World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), which happens every year on September 10 and focuses on suicide prevention. Please feel free to print off the poster below and use it for the promotion of WSPD!

WSPD aims to promote action to prevent suicide, and this is mainly done by spreading the awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death. According to the World Health Organization, “At the local level, policy statements and research outcomes need to be translated into prevention programs and activities in communities.” The Centre for Suicide Prevention in Calgary, Alberta has a very similar mission: to equip individuals and organizations with the information, knowledge and skills necessary to respond to the risk of suicide.
WSPD started as an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in 2003, and now IASP and the WHO are the global promoters of this event. However, there are a number of other great organizations worldwide who are participating in this day.
