Each year, approximately one million people die by suicide around the world (WHO, 2003). In many western countries, suicide is a leading cause of death, particularly among young people. Suicide attempts occur much more frequently but no reliable data exist to confirm the true extent of the problem (IASP, 2004). Suicidal behaviours, regardless of outcome, have the potential to affect anyone within an individuals’ personal or professional life.
In 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association of Suicide Prevention (IASP) jointly declared September 10 to be World Suicide Prevention Day. The goal of this day was to hold events that would raise public awareness about suicide. It was later decided that World Suicide Prevention Day would be an annual event.
In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Centre for Suicide Prevention is pleased to present the following information on national, state, and provincial suicide prevention strategies: |
